Carole Biggam (Visiting Fellow 2001) has recently published her book The Semantics of Colour: a Historical Approach with Cambridge University Press. Hasok Chang (Professorial Fellow) has published Is Water H2O? Evidence, Realism and Pluralism. Jeffrey Colyer (MPhil 1981) was recently elected Lt. Governor of the state of Kansas, the position is equivalent of Vice President for a state. William Conklin (Visiting Fellow 2001) has had one of his books translated into French, Le savoir oublié de l’expérience des lois. Rachel Cowgill (Visiting Fellow 2012) has edited a collection of essays entitled Clare Hall would like to wish Richard Eden (founder of the College) a happy 90th Birthday. Research by Dr Karen Ersche (Research Fellow 2006-09) finds that cocaine abuse accelerates the brain ageing process. Olivier de Frouville (Visiting Fellow 2012) has been appointed as a Professor of International in Université Paris 2 (Panthéon-Assas) and as a member of the Institut Universitaire de France (I.U.F) with a five year research programme. Olivier has also published two books and has been appointed Chair-Rapporteur of the United Nations Working Group on Enforced Disappearances. Lindsay Falvey (Visiting Fellow 2005) has been appointed to the Board of Hassad Australia, a wholly owned company of Qatar that is a major investor in high-technology extensive agriculture in Australia. He has also recently published a book, Re-cultivating Agricultural Science: What I learnt in 40 years of Professional Life. He is offering free copies to interested Fellows who may contact him at Emmanuel Garnier (Visiting Fellow 2012) was elected as the French Government Overseas Fellow for the academic year 2012-13 on May 29th 2012 for his research project HEALTH. Jesper Gulddal (Visiting Fellow 2005-06) and Julie Jupp (Postdoctoral Associate 2007-2009) are proud to announce the birth of their first daughter Delphine who was born in April. In other news Jesper has also published a book entitled Anti-Americanism in European Literature. Congratulations to Antony Hooley (PhD 1971) and Evelyn Nallen for their wedding which took place in Cornwall on 28 April 2012. Abdur Khan (Visiting Fellow 1981-82) published his book Fundamentalism, Musharraf and the Great Double Game in North-West Pakistan in April 2011. Miriam Levin (Visiting Fellow 2012) was first author and principal investigator on the project which resulted in the publication of Urban Modernity: Cultural Innovation in the Second Industrial Revolution which has been honoured by the American Library Association as an outstanding book of 2011. Miriam was also invited to lecture at Imperial College London’s Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine. Michael Loewe (Emeritus Fellow) was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of East Anglia. Jennifer Rampling (Research Fellow) will appear in the first episode of a new BBC programme entitled 'A History of the World in Three Colours' on 23 July. She was interviewed about alchemists and the quest for transmutation in early modern Europe and recreated an alchemical experiment in a modern lab. Barbara Sahakian (Professorial Fellow) met Jim Al-Khalili to discuss Neurotransmitters and Neuropharmacology on BBC Radio Four. Malabika Sarkar (Visiting Fellow 2002-03) was appointed Vice Chancellor of Presidency University in Kolkata, India in October 2011. She has also written a new book entitled Cosmos and Character in ‘Paradise Lost’ published by Palgrave Macmillan. Ingrid Tieken (Visiting Fellow 2011) started a blog about her new research project Bridging the Unbridgeable: Linguists, Prescriptivists and the General Public. She would greatly welcome input. James Utterback (Visiting Fellow 2005) has been awarded an honorary doctoral degree as part of the inaugural Leuven International Forum: Networking for knowledge and society, a premier networking and leadership event held in Leuven on 1 June. Erin Poole Walters (PhD 2010- ) will be playing for the Wales Women’s Lacrosse Team at the European Championships at the end of June in Amsterdam. She also competed in BUCS National Championships this year with the Cambridge Blues Lacrosse team. |
