NB. The Student Seminars Series is currently inactive. Whoever wishes to take over the Series should contact The GSB.

The Clare Hall Student Seminars series is designed to give graduate students in the college an opportunity to make presentations on their research to other members of the college, whether students, fellows or life members. Some general intentions of Clare Hall Student Seminars:

  1. Talks are only given by students, not senior members of the college.
  2. Students from any field are welcome to present.
  3. The intention is for students to get constructive input from other members of the college on both their topic and their presentation style. This may be especially helpful if the talk is a dry run for a later conference presentation.

Seminars are held on alternating Thursday evenings, at 8:00 pm.  Each talk is normally 20 minutes long, often accompanied by a powerpoint presentation, and is followed by questions and discussion.   Drinks are available in the ALB bar.

The 2010 Student Seminar series is organised and facilitated by Valentino Pironti and Yvonne Khoo (Contact: vp271@cam.ac.uk / yskk2@cam.ac.uk).

Further information: Talks are expected to be pitched at a general level, so that non-specialists can understand. As a result, presenters are encouraged to give general background information, to define necessary technical terms and to avoid unnecessary jargon. The primary purpose of the discussion time afterward is to encourage the presenter, to offer him/her constructive suggestions for additional lines of research and to raise important questions that have perhaps been overlooked. It is not intended to be an intensely critical session.
