Clare Hall: The Origins and Development of a College for Advanced Study

The first part of the book outlines the history of the University and the developments that preceded the decision by Clare College to found Clare Hall, including the social changes that made such a foundation desirable and the financial developments that made it possible.

The second part describes how discussions in Clare College led to a proposal by Richard Eden that the College establish a centre for advanced study. This proposal was unanimously accepted by the Governing Body and led to the founding of Clare Hall two years later.

The third part describes Clare Hall since its foundation in February 1966, including the grant of a Royal Charter in 1984, the development of Clare Hall’s West Court beginning in 1997, and the increasing diversity and strength of the international relations of Clare Hall.

Richard Eden, Emeritus Professor of energy studies, was first elected to a Fellowship at Clare College in 1951 when he became Clare’s director of studies in mathematics. He went with his wife and children to the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study in 1954, and subsequently he was a frequent visitor to universities and research centres in the United States and Europe. In February 1966 he became a founding Fellow of Clare Hall, where he is now an Honorary Fellow.
