Family Suppers

Family Supper is one of the activities that make Clare Hall unique amongst Cambridge Colleges.  It offers an opportunity for the Fellows (both new and long standing) and students to gather with their families for an enjoyable evening.  Traditionally the evening takes place on the first Friday of the month (except in January 2013, when the event will take place on the second Friday) and starts at 5.45pm with a pre-arranged activity for the children (craft, games etc.).  Dinner is served at 6.45pm.   It is important that you book for each child’s meal rather than letting two children share a meal to ensure that there are the correct number of place settings. Mark, H for hot, S for salad or C for child’s portion.  Children’s meals will be charged at the student rate.  Please remember after eating to clear up your children’s plates, or better yet encourage them to do it themselves!
After dinner, there is a video provided (when available) in the College meeting room for children and parents.  Children can be left to watch the video unsupervised if you are confident they will stay in the room.   There are often older children who will look after the younger children if they are asked, but please do not assume that anyone else is supervising your child.
At this time parents who have engaged their children tend to meet for a quiet glass of wine in the Common Room.  It is a great opportunity for families at Clare Hall to meet and socialise and a relaxing way to end the week.

Finally, please remember that your children are your guests at College.  Once the kitchen closes there is no one here to clean up after their activities, nor are the porters free to look after them.  You will need to take care of them, as there is no other supervision provided.  Children should not run in the corridors as it can be dangerous for them and can be disturbing to other people using the common areas.  They should not be in the garden or toilets alone.  They should not use the lifts (it can take several hours for someone from maintenance to come to release them as experienced by one young girl not so long ago).

As you can imagine the evening does not plan itself.  We are currently looking for volunteers to help organise activities for the first half-hour and to help with clearing up at the end of the evening.  If you could help, even occasionally, please contact Sohini Kar-Narayan by email; sk568@cam.ac.uk

The next Family Supper is scheduled for Friday 11th January 2013.
Please enjoy the evening.
