William Beckford

The volume on the reception of William Beckford is part of the Project's Sub-series on Eighteenth Century Authors. The Editors of the volume are Prof. John Wilton-Ely and Dr Elinor Shaffer.

John Wilton-Ely is Emeritus Professor at the University of Hull (Department of History of Art). He was an initiator of modern Beckford studies, in 'Beckford and architecture' in William Beckford (Exhibition catalogue), Salisbury and Bath, 1976, and in his paper 'The genesis and evolution of Fonthill Abbey' in Architectural History, XXIII (1980), pp. 40-51.

Elinor Shaffer is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Germanic Studies (School of Advanced Study), University of London, and the Director of the Research Project: The Reception of British Authors in Europe. She is the author of '"To remind us of China": William Beckford, Mental Traveller on the Grand Tour. The Construction of Landscape', in Transports: Imaginative Geographies 1600-1830, ed. by C. Chard and H. Langdon (Yale University Press and the Paul Mellon Center, 1996).

Coffee and tea will be provided upon arrival. The Symposium will conclude with a wine reception at the Centre.

There will be a visit led by Philip Hewat-Jaboor to the Beckford Exhibition on Saturday, 9 March. A group will depart at 10 a.m. from the Mellon Centre by public transport, to arrive at Dulwich Picture Gallery at around 10.45 a.m. Some participants may prefer to join the group at this stage.
