The latest round of the postdoctoral researchers' 3 Slide Talks series on 8 February offered the usual mix of engaging presentation, lively discussion, and sociable refreshment. Featuring the works of Dr Gabriel Byng (pictured), Dr Wu Huiyi, and Dr Alekhya Mandali, it ranged from the arts to the sciences and illustrated some of the range of different subjects that Clare Hall postdocs are researching.Dr Byng expounded on a liturgical object loaded with meaning, the medieval "pax," used to substitute for the Sign of Peace in the Catholic mass. New Book by Trudi Tate

Official Fellow Trudi Tate has recently published A Short History of the Crimean War (I. B. Tauris, 2019). The Crimean War (1854-56) is often seen as the first modern war. A struggle between imperial Russia and an alliance of the British, French and Ottoman empires, it was the first war to be reported by eye-witnesses in the newspapers, the first to use the telegraph, and the first to be photographed. Trudi Tate explores these cultural representations alongside the... Read more

Burns Night 2019

Former Vice-President, Stephen Bourne introduced this celebration of the life and poetry of Robert Burns and recited the famous Selkirk Grace. The kitchens served a ‘braw’ meal with the best of Scottish produce including salmon, venison and of course the... Clare Hall Boat Club Novices at Emma Sprints Regatta 2018

The new rowers at Clare Hall Boat Club (CHBC) participated in Emma Sprints on Sunday 18 November. This regatta is an annual event intended to get the novices racing on the river Cam, in fancy dress. The men’s crew dressed up as escaped prisoners and rowed so fast it could have been called a crime! You might not have been able to find the women’s crew, as they were dressed up as Wally! Both crews did incredibly well in their first race and won by at least one boat-length. In the second round, both crews had to tip their hat to stronger opponents. The CHBC’s novices had... Read more
