The Salje Medal Winners 2018

Our annual Salje Medals were presented on the 7 November at Formal Hall by the President of Clare Hall, David Ibbetson. The medals are given annually to two research students, one in Arts/Humanities and Social Sciences and one in the Sciences, whose completed PhD thesis and publications merit high commendation. The College is very sorry to pass on the sad news that Don King, Honorary Fellow of the College and a very generous benefactor has died. He had been ill for some time. We send our condolences to Mary Elizabeth and the rest of his family.

Welcome to 1966 - A GSB Formal Dinner

On 11 October, Clare Hall went back to 1966 during a special formal organised by the Graduate Student Body (GSB). New and old students were brought together for a vibrant evening during Freshers’ Week, to celebrate the foundation of Clare Hall. While 60’s hits were playing through the speakers, guests enjoyed a wonderful themed menu including shrimp cocktails and melba roulade. Liberation Literature Lecture Series 2018

This year Clare Hall welcomes Anne Sebba, the award-winning British biographer, writer, lecturer and journalist to share her latest work on the lives and experiences of Parisian women during the WW2 Nazi occupation of France.  Entitled Parisian Women and the Nazi Occupation: Uncovering their lives and their relationships, the lecture will explore how the women of Paris responded to the occupation and why so many of them have refused to talk about their experiences.This event has been kindly sponsored by Sir Charles Chadwyck-Healey and will be held on the 1 November in the... Clare Hall Matriculation Ceremony

On Monday 8 October, Clare Hall's new students matriculated in a formal ceremony in the King Room, in which everyone signed the new matriculation book in the presence of the President, Vice-President, Praelector, Tutors, and other Fellows, accompanied by Sophia Ramnarine on the cello. Friends of Clare Hall Art Society - Jacquiline Creswell

Clare Hall Induction Meeting and Lunch

The College Vice-President, Professor Alan Short, and the Senior Tutor, Dr Iain Black, plus the Tutors, welcomed all the new Clare Hall students at an Induction meeting and lunch on Sunday 30 September. We also heard from the Graduate Student President, Mariana Pinto Leitão Pereira, the Boat Club, the Cricket Club, and others. Clare Hall College Buildings - Grade II* Listed

The College has been notified by Historic England that the original College buildings, designed by architect Ralph Erskine, have been listed by the Secretary of State as Grade II*, that is 'of being of more than special interest'. In their advice to the Secretary of State, Historic England write: 'Clare Hall is an outstanding building complex. It is a pleasing and human scale development which is widely regarded as one of the architect's most successful works.' Read more

Cello and Piano: Beyond the Score

Cellist Adrian Brendel and pianist David Dolan return to further explore the performer’s role as creator over different musical styles. In a programme providing the performers with a scope for extemporisations and following seventeenth and eighteenth centuries performance practice, the duo will embellish repeats and improvise preludes and interludes to create the setting for the pieces performed and to connect between movements and works.
