Think of a typical ‘English Summer’ and strawberries, croquet, cream tea and scones immediately spring to mind. On 17 June, which coincided with the World Cup Germany-Mexico game, the Clare Hall Postdoc committee organised an English cream tea afternoon for all College members - with the addition of laptops screening live football.
For some Visiting Fellows, this was their first experience of an English cream tea outdoors. For others, it was an opportunity to catch up with friends in our beautiful Fellows Garden. But for most, it was a chance to watch the football while enjoying delicious tea and scones.
Using the College classic croquet set, Research Fellows competed with students and even some children – making this a real family event. The College also recently acquired a large-piece chess set which was very popular amongst board game lovers.
The Postdocs provided tea and scones from a local bakery in town and made sure that there were plenty of fresh strawberries and fruit to go around. In fact, given the hot spell, it was touted that the strawberry yield was one of the sweetest to date.
The event was a sell-out, and we look forward to organising more get-togethers in the academic year to come.
