Clare Hall Fellow Appointed as Pro-Proctor

On the nomination of Clare Hall, Dr Annamaria Motrescu-Mayes has been appointed a Pro-Proctor for the academic year 2019–20.  Annamaria is the 14th woman to serve as a Proctor at the University of Cambridge, a post that has been traditionally held by men until 1979. She will then continue to serve as a Proctor 2020 - 2021 and as Deputy Proctor 2021 - 2022.

Over the last 800 years, the Proctors’ duties have been amended to meet up-to-date governing and academic responsibilities. Some of their current key responsibilities include:

  • oversee that the principle and promotion of freedom of speech and expression is respected by all members of the University
  • serve on several University bodies, committees, and boards, such as the Board of Scrutiny
  • administer the registration of University Societies
  • ensure good order and discipline in the University
  • attend Discussions of University business at meetings of the Regent House
  • attend Congregations of the Regent House for the conferring of degrees. Their presence at Congregations is essential
