Research Interests

Sylvain Veilleux's research interests are in extragalactic astrophysics. He is best known for his work on active galactic nuclei, objects powered by supermassive black holes, and starburst galaxies, systems that form stars at prodigious rates. He has pioneered the use of optical, near-infrared, and mid-infrared emission line diagnostics to quantify the role of nuclear activity and star formation in galaxies.  He has also played a leading role in understanding the impact of nuclear activity and star formation on the extragalactic environment. A significant fraction of his research effort has relied on the use of state-of-the-art instruments developed and commissioned by his research group and collaborators. The results from his research have appeared in more than 230 peer-reviewed publications.

He is a member of the faculty in the Department of Astronomy of the University of Maryland, College Park. He has been the Optical Director at Maryland since 2003. He is also a Fellow of the Joint Space-Science Institute, a partnership between the University of Maryland and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

In addition to holding a Clare Hall Fellowship, Sylvain Veilleux is the Raymond and Beverley Sackler Distinguished Visitor at the Institute of Astronomy, University of Cambridge and the Kavli Lecturer at the Kavli Institute of Cosmology, Cambridge.
