At Clare Hall, we refer to all former Students, Visiting Fellows, Research Fellows and Associates as Life Members - and it means just that - you are a member for life, and as such you are always welcome to return to College to renew acquaintances, make use of facilities as well as enjoy the intellectual and social environment.
By becoming a Life Member of Clare Hall, you join an inclusive and welcoming society of international leaders and academics, unique among all the Cambridge Colleges. We would like to encourage you to make the most of this.
One of the many benefits of being a Life Member is the opportunity to return to Clare Hall, so long as there is a flat available. My husband and I have returned for three months for many years, after our first two years as visiting fellows. We treasure our time here, picking up old friendships, making new ones, and being near our children and grandchildren who live in Cambridge. It is so easy to slip back into the old routine, with lunches in the dining hall, trips into town, musical events and exhibitions, not to speak of the time to do our scholarly work in peace and quiet.

Dining in College
As a Life Member, you can pop in for lunch or supper or join us for Formal Hall on a Wednesday evening. You are entitled to bring up three guests without notifying us. If you wish to bring a larger group, you are welcome to do so, but you will need to let us know so that we can ensure that we plan appropriately for your group and regular diners. To book Formal Hall, please complete our online booking form.
All Life Members and friends are also welcome to attend our regular Life Members' Lunch on the first Thursday of every month. If you would like to attend and do not already have a UPay card, then please purchase your ticket for £10 from the Porters’ Lodge and present it to the Servery staff when choosing your meal options. This a regular monthly chance to talk and share thoughts with fellow Life Members.
