Professor Jakob Fortunat Stagl, an Austrian citizen, obtained his doctoral degree (doctor iuris) in comparative law in Freiburg i.Br. with a thesis on the interpretation of testaments. After having completed his legal training in Berlin he turned to Roman law and wrote a habilitation thesis at the University of Bonn on 'favor dotis', that is the rules of the Roman legal system in favour of dowries. In the field of civil law, he has published in recent years on problems of the transfer of ownership. Concerning Roman Law, his special interests are the law of the Roman family, transfer of ownership and the systematisation of Roman law. He is currently writing a book on the morphology of the Digest. Professor Stagl is also interested in the medieval and modern history of Roman law, especially the 'Siete Partidas'.  Apart from that he regularly writes about methodological problems and the question of natural law.

He is currently holding a chair of 'Introduction to Law' and 'Roman Law' at the Universidad de Chile, Santiago de Chile.

Professor Stagl joined Clare Hall as a Visiting Fellow in January 2020, together with his wife Isabel Arias Camacho, a physicist, and his son Johann Alexander.
