Clare Hall is delighted to invite applications for the position of President, offering an opportunity to lead this research-intensive College as it enters its seventh decade. The new President will follow a succession of distinguished Presidents, most recently the architectural expert Professor Alan Short, who stands down in September 2027.

The Fellows are seeking a distinguished individual from a research-rich environment who can provide thoughtful and inspiring leadership to Clare Hall’s self-governing, egalitarian community of researchers and scholars. Candidates should bring excellent judgement, warmth and strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead through influence and example.

Founded in 1966 as an institute for advanced study within the collegiate University of Cambridge, Clare Hall is a non-hierarchical academic community dedicated entirely to research and postgraduate education. Its membership spans the sciences, arts and humanities, while its extensive Visiting Fellowship programme hosts leading scholars from around the world.

The President serves as Head of the College and holds ultimate responsibility for its academic and collegiate life, the wellbeing of its members and the stewardship of its charitable mission. The successful candidate will represent Clare Hall within the University and internationally, while playing a central role in the College’s strategic development during a significant period of renewal and ambition.

The position is part-time, flexible working, with a commitment of up to 60 per cent of work time. It may be combined with other appropriate academic or professional responsibilities, subject to agreement with the Governing Body.
