From Clare Hall to BBC Science Focus: Noa Leach’s journey in science journalism
It is always a pleasure to see former Clare Hall students thriving, and we have been delighted to follow Alumna and Life Member Noa Leach’s achievements since her time at the College. Noa, who was Clare Hall’s first recipient of a full Boak Studentship, has gone on to build a successful career in science journalism and is now Special Projects Editor at BBC Science Focus.
During her MPhil, Noa brought together literature and environmental thought, exploring how Virginia Woolf’s ideas about nature influenced later writers and artists. After graduating, she began her career as an editor for a regional Wildlife Trust magazine before moving into science journalism.
At BBC Science Focus, Noa identifies and develops stories from across the world of scientific research. Working closely with scientists and writers, she helps turn complex ideas into engaging and accessible features for a broad audience.
Noa’s studies were made possible by the Boak Fund, created in 2015 following a generous legacy from the late Professor Charles Boak. By covering both her tuition fees and living expenses, the award gave her the freedom to concentrate on her academic work while taking an active part in College life, from rowing and singing in the choir to spending time at the allotment.
The Boak Studentship was an incredible support and central to my development and success — I’m eternally grateful for it.
