Clare College Choral Evensong, Michaelmas 2026

All members of Clare Hall are warmly welcome to a special Choral Evensong at Clare Chapel, on Thursday 22nd October, at 6.15pm. This may be of particular interest to new Clare Hall students, who will have a chance to experience a unique aspect of college life, and hear our wonderful Clare Choir sing!

The Evensong service will last about 40 minutes, opening with the introit, O Lord, the maker of all thing by the English 16th-century composer William Mundy. The Renaissance theme continues with a cappella canticles by Italian Francesco Suriano and Spaniard Tomás Luis de Victoria. Words from the Ascensiontide psalm 47, O clap your hands together, are set by the contemporary British composer Cecilia McDowall in a homage to the double-choir setting by Orlando Gibbons. McDowall’s music also frames the service with two organ voluntaries taken from her O Antiphon Sequence.

At the end of the service, there will be a special drinks reception for Clare Hall guests in the ante-Chapel. Clare Chapel is there for both the Clare and Clare Hall communities, as a place of beauty, peace, reflection and conviviality, and we look forward to welcoming you!
