Celebrating Diwali at Clare Hall

6 November 2026 College life

Clare Hall was filled with colour and celebration on Wednesday as members of the College community and their guests gathered for our Diwali Formal, ahead of the festival itself on Sunday 8 November. Many came wearing beautiful traditional dress, adding to the festive atmosphere of an evening spent sharing food, learning about the festival and celebrating together.

During dinner, Rishul Karia, GSB EDI Officer 2026/27, gave a warm introduction to the stories and traditions behind Diwali. He spoke about the Festival of Lights as a time for family and friends to come together, celebrating the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.

Rishul shared the story of Rama and Sita’s return to Ayodhya and explained how the lights of Diwali symbolise their welcome home. He also spoke about the celebrations that surround Diwali, with traditions varying across regions of India. These include Dhanteras, a time of prayers for prosperity and wellbeing; Bestu Varas, which marks the New Year for Gujarati communities; and Bhai Dooj, a celebration of the bond between brothers and sisters, extending to cousins in his own family’s traditions.

It was especially lovely to see some of these traditions reflected in our evening. Rangoli decorations welcomed guests at the entrance, and food was served family-style, encouraging everyone to share a meal in the spirit of the festival. A heartfelt thank-you goes to our Catering Team for preparing such a lovely traditional menu and helping make the occasion feel special.

After dinner, guests gathered outside with sparklers, lighting up the November night in true Diwali fashion. A Bollywood dance-along followed, bringing everyone together for a lively and joyful end to the celebrations.

Thank you to Rishul for sharing these traditions with us, to everyone who helped organise the evening, and to all who came along. It was a lovely opportunity to share traditions, enjoy one another’s company and make happy memories together at Clare Hall.
