Clare College Choral Evensong sign up
Sunday 5 February, 6pm
Building on the success of last term’s visit, all members of the Clare Hall community are once again warmly invited to a special Choral Evensong in Clare Chapel. Please complete the below form by Sunday 29 January to reserve your place.
As part of Clare’s celebrations of 50 years of co-education, this service will feature a rich programme of musical works, three of which were written for the College Choir: a setting of the Lord’s Prayer by current Clare undergraduate Music student Lilly Vadanaeux, a setting of the Preces and Responses by Clare alumnus Joshua Pacey (Clare 2013), and Herbert Howells’ anthem The fear of the Lord, commissioned and premièred by the Choir and then Director of Music John Rutter for the College’s 650th anniversary in 1976. The service also features a stirring setting of Psalm 24 as set by French 20th composer Lili Boulanger for choir and piano, as well as a Magnificat by Sergei Rachmaninov (from his ‘All-Night Vigil’) and a Nunc dimittis by Howells composed for St Paul’s Cathedral in London. Our guest speaker at Evensong will be the Rev’d Sophie Young, from St Bene’t’s Church in Cambridge, who is the Bishop’s Advisor for Homelessness.
The service will last about an hour, and will be followed by drinks in the ante-Chapel.
For those who would like to stay, there will then be supper served in the Buttery, which costs about £5 and can be paid for by contactless card at the Buttery till. Please include the number of Buttery spaces you’d like to reserve via the form below as applicable.
Those wishing to walk over together from Clare Hall should gather outside the Porters’ Lodge at 5.30pm.
There is no formal dress code for the service.
