Violence and hope on Pakistan’s border: an educational encounter
From 2006-2011 David Gosling was principal of Edwardes College in the University of Peshawar, situated in the Pashtun tribal belt close to the Afghan border. During this period he was able to improve academic standards and increase the number and conditions of women staff and students. But his commitment to women’s education brought him into conflict with Taliban extremists who served a fatwa (death threat) on him. This experience highlights the profound challenges and risks faced by educators promoting gender inclusivity and educational advancement in conflict zones.
Dr David L Gosling is a Life Member and former Spalding Fellow of Clare Hall.
