Fitzwilliam String Quartet: Beach, Shostakovich, Beethoven
The Fitzwilliam String Quartet return to Clare Hall with a programme that spans three distinct musical worlds. The evening opens in America with Amy Beach’s String Quartet in One Movement, written in 1929 and inspired by expressive Alaskan Inuit melodies. The programme then shifts to the introspective and emotionally charged atmosphere of Dmitri Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 9, a continuous five-movement work noted for its depth and personal character.
The concert concludes with the grandeur of Beethoven’s String Quartet in E-flat major, Op. 127, one of the composer’s late masterpieces and a cornerstone of the quartet repertoire.
