Programme:
Beethoven Sonata opus 2 no2
Franck Prelude Aria et Final
Reger Variations on a Theme by Bach opus 81
Ariel Lanyi, one of the most talented young pianists in Britain, presents here a programme of great originality.
Beethoven’s second Sonata is one of the least performed, yet it is an ambitious work. It owes much to Haydn, its dedicatee, while turning its back on it to look at new horizons. Cesar Franck’s Prelude Aria et Final has always been eclipsed by its more famous companion, the Prelude Choral et Fugue, yet it is a work that deserves to be known. Reger’s monumental Bach Variations is his most substantial composition for the piano. In design, it is an heir to Bach’s Goldberg, Beethoven Diabelli or Brahms Handel Variations, hugely dense and complex, it is one of the peaks of 20th century German literature for the piano.
