Clare Hall celebrates the Bell Collection with symposium and book launch

28 October 2026 College life

It was a pleasure to welcome artists, writers and guests to Clare Hall on Saturday 24 October for a day devoted to studio ceramics and the launch of Studio Potters: The Bell Collection at Clare Hall, a new book by Clare Hall Associates Professor Gordon Bell and Helen Ritchie.

The symposium, Studio Ceramics: International Dimensions, explored the people, places and exchanges that have shaped the art of pottery. Professor Alan Short welcomed guests before Professor Paul Greenhalgh opened the programme with a talk on British studio ceramics and their place in the wider world. Writer and editor Isabella Smith then followed Janet Leach’s life and work across America, Japan and England.

After lunch, the focus turned to the experience of making. Professor Felicity Aylieff shared insights into her collaborations with ceramics factories in Jingdezhen, China, where she creates monumental porcelain pots. Halima Cassell spoke about her own artistic practice and Virtues of Unity, exploring the connections between clay, pattern and cultural influences. Questions from the audience rounded off the sessions.

Guests then gathered in the Common Room for a drinks reception to celebrate the new book, Studio Potters: The Bell Collection at Clare Hall, which celebrates the collection and explores the development of studio pottery and the international influences behind it.

Our thanks go to all the speakers and to the Isaac Newton Trust and MAAK Foundation for supporting the book launch.

Copies are now available to purchase at the Porters’ Lodge at the discounted price of £39.99. Only a limited number are available.
