Deck Clare Hall with joyful giving this year

4 December 2024

Our warmest holiday wishes to our Life Members and supporters all over the world, and a huge thank you for your enduring generosity towards Clare Hall.

Clare Hall continues to draw distinguished academics and a vibrant cohort of exceptional postgraduate students eager to make their mark on the world. We are immensely grateful to all the donors who supported the College’s key initiatives over the past year, enabling Clare Hall to excel in every endeavor. Your support has been vital in making Clare Hall the flourishing institution it is today.

The College has made significant progress on its restoration, receiving the first draft of its Conservation Management Plan, which was authored by one of Britain’s leading conservation architects, Fiona Lamb. This is an important step towards preserving Ralph Erskine’s 1960’s Scandinavian vision and will help us restore and maintain the spaces for current and future students and academics. The Ralph Erskine Building Restoration Fund continues to be crucial in helping us realise this vision. To this end, we now require further support for the second phase of the project, hence donations towards our Ralph Erskine Building Restoration Fund continue to be greatly welcomed.

Furthermore, we have founded our new Sustainability Fund, kindly initiated by Clare Hall Life Member David Chernushenko, with an eye towards long-term sustainability. This fund will support vital projects that will make the College more energy efficient and decarbonise our buildings. Your contribution to this fund would be greatly appreciated as it will not only reduce our environmental impact but also lower energy costs, freeing up vital resources for key academic and operational initiatives.

If you prefer to support other areas of College life, please consider donating to our General Support Fund. These donations are immensely valuable as they enable the College to address the most urgent needs as they arise. Contributions to our Student Support Fund are greatly appreciated too as they provide essential resources to ensure the well-being of our students throughout their time at Clare Hall.

Please find more information about these vital initiatives below.

Whichever area of need you choose to support will make a tremendous difference to the College in achieving its aims. Your participation today, at any level that is meaningful to you, makes a significant difference and is sincerely appreciated.

The Ralph Erskine Building Restoration Fund

Funds raised towards this initiative will transform the College and its surroundings, fostering a more supportive environment for research and study. It will also preserve this historic estate for current and future generations, in line with architect Ralph Erskine’s original 1960’s Scandinavian vision, whilst also resolving pre-existing issues. Besides transforming the buildings, the plans include improving the landscape and courtyards.

The Sustainability Fund

This fund will support essential projects such as sealing windows, improving insulation, decarbonising our buildings and installing solar panels. Your contribution to this fund would be greatly appreciated as it will not only reduce our environmental impact but also lower energy costs, freeing up vital resources for key academic and operational initiatives. The funds raised will have a transformative effect, enabling us to create a greener, more sustainable environment that will tremendously benefit the College and wider collective efforts in the longer term.

The General Support Fund

Donations towards our General Support Fund are immensely valuable as they enable the College to address the most urgent needs as they arise, giving the College maximum flexibility in its use. Contributions to this fund are always greatly appreciated and tremendously impactful.

The Student Support Fund

Students are at the heart of Clare Hall, which is one of only two postgraduate Colleges in Cambridge. Donations towards our Student Support Fund are hugely appreciated by our close-knit community of postgraduates, who have benefitted greatly from various bursaries, well-being initiatives and hardship support as a result of your gifts.

Donor recognition: Those who make gifts towards these Funds will be listed in the gift list published within the next edition the Review magazine. Should you wish to remain anonymous, please kindly inform us at development@clarehall.cam.ac.uk. Significant gifts to the College will be given appropriate acknowledgement by the College.
