The video portrait highlights Takei’s personal history, including his childhood experience in the United States detention camps for Japanese Americans during the Second World War. Takei has written and spoken widely about this period, including publishing several accounts aimed at helping younger audiences understand this chapter of American history.

Dr Newborn creates these video portraits in collaboration with video journalist Waldo Cabrera. Together they produce short films for each national and international guest who appears at the Cinema Arts Centre in Long Island, New York. The Centre is one of the oldest and most respected independent film institutions in the United States.

Their next featured guest will be Susan Stroman, the five-time Tony Award winning Broadway director and choreographer. Dr Newborn’s continued success reflects his commitment to storytelling that brings notable cultural figures and their experiences to a wider audience.
