On 17 February 2022, Research.com announced the list of its 1,000 top mathematicians worldwide, ranked according to the h-index.

Professor Athanassios S Fokas, Emeritus Fellow of Clare Hall, has ranked first among all mathematicians of the two mathematics departments of the University of Cambridge – namely of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics – where he occupied the chair of Nonlinear Mathematical Science in 2002-21, and of the Department of Pure Mathematics and Theoretical Statistics.

Overall, Professor Fokas is ranked eighth in the UK, over the entire period that the h-list is documented. Among the distinguished mathematicians included in this list is the late Sir Michael Atiyah, former President of the Royal Society.
