It is with deep sorrow that the College announces the passing of David P. Gardner, former President of the University of California and the University of Utah.

A visionary in higher education, Prof. Gardner peacefully departed on January 2, 2024, at the age of 90.

Professor David Gardner became the president of the University of Utah in 1973. He returned to the University of California in 1983 as President. His wife Libby was named Associate to the President, and he worked with her closely. He resigned after her death in 1991. Her ashes are interred at the Mother and Child fountain at Clare Hall where she and David enjoyed a very happy time when he joined the College as a Visiting Fellow in 1979.

A Tribute will be held on January 12, 2024, at the University of Utah, and a Celebration of Life on January 19, 2024, at UC Berkeley. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation.
