PhD student Ange La Furcia awarded Honorable Mention in SSSP Student Paper Competition Award
Our warmest congratulations to PhD student Ange La Furcia, who has been awarded the Honorable Mention in the Society for the Study of Social Problems’s Gender Division’s Student Paper Competition Award. Ange’s paper, “The lived experiences of beauty and grammars of the maricada in the Colombian insular Caribbean,” was recognised for making important contributions in the fields of gender and intersectionality.
The paper is a result of Ange’s PhD dissertation on Beauty, politicization, and racism in the Colombian Insular Caribbean, and is under review on an issue about non-hegemonic beauties of the Feminist Theory Journal, edited by Dr. Julieta Vartabedian and Prof. Mónica Moreno Figueroa.
I thank Miss Nancy Land Organization for Afro-Caribbean Women and Young Islanders for their community work in the Colombian Insular Caribbean. I dedicate the prize to all transgender women collaborating with me during this long ethnographic beauty pageant journey!
