Professor Barbara Sahakian discusses brain health and ageing in The Telegraph

22 January 2026 Fellows

Professor Barbara Sahakian, Fellow of Clare Hall, was recently featured in The Telegraph in an article exploring how cognitive function changes with age and how lifestyle choices can support long-term brain health.

The article discusses findings from a 2025 Nature Aging study identifying three ages when cognitive decline becomes more noticeable for many people: around 57, 70, and 78. While these changes are a natural part of ageing, Professor Sahakian explains that their impact is strongly influenced by long-term habits, including physical health, mental stimulation, and social engagement.

Professor Sahakian highlights the importance of planning ahead for brain health, drawing parallels with preventative care in other areas of medicine. She emphasises the role of regular exercise, continued learning, and maintaining strong social connections in building cognitive reserve, which can help delay the effects of cognitive decline later in life.

Clare Hall is proud to see Professor Sahakian’s research and public engagement contributing to wider understanding of how evidence-based lifestyle choices can support cognitive wellbeing across the lifespan.
