The book offers a revisionist history of the collapse of the Tang dynasty, drawing on previously unexplored records from the secretariat of Gao Pian, a prominent general and military governor who was among the most powerful figures in ninth-century China.

A significant part of the research for the book was carried out while Franciscus and his wife Isabelle Verellen were in residence at Clare Hall in 2022.

Further details are available on the publisher’s website and the Fifteen Eighty Four blog.
