We had a lovely graduation dinner on Friday 21 followed by a memorable graduation ceremony on Saturday 22 at King’s College; three Doctors of Philosophy and five Masters of Philosophy.

Coronavirus : Latest guidance

The College has adopted a precautionary policy in the interest of all members of the College community, of holding off accepting accommodation bookings from Life Members from areas at high risk of Coronavirus (COVID 19). 

A regularly updated list can be found here.  High risk for the College’s purposes extends to countries in both Columns 1 and 2.

2020 Cambridge Lent Bumps

The Clare Hall Boat Club crews have been training hard throughout January and February and are now ready to defend the College colours in the 2020 Cambridge Lent Bumps.

Both our women’s and men’s crews are participating and would appreciate your support from their fellow Clare Hall members. We recommend watching the race from the riverbank between the Baits Bite Lock and Chesterton. Or on Saturday 29 February, a member of the boat club will lead anyone who wishes to spectate, from the Porters’ Lodge, directly to the river. Please be ready to leave at 11.30 am...

Clare Hall Boat Club at Newnham Head

The women’s and men’s crews of Clare Hall Boat Club competed at Newnham Head last week, clocking some respectable times in preparation for Lent Bumps. Newnham Head is a timed race of about 2km and proved physically challenging for our crews after many strong strokes. The women’s crew came in after 10:01 minutes, earning them a respectable 17th place in their division. The men’s crew completed the course in 07:41 minutes, making them the 4th place in their division.

Dr Lori Passmore honoured with RNA Society Award

Clare Hall Official Fellow Dr Lori Passmore has been named as the recipient of the RNA Society’s inaugural 2020 Elisa Izaurralde Award.

Professor Peter Wadhams Book Wins Academic Prize

Congratulations to Professor Peter Wadhams as the Korean edition of his book A Farewell to Ice recently won the Excellent Academic Book prize from KPIPA (Publication Industry Promotion Agency of Korea). The Italian edition, entitled Addio ai Ghiacci, was placed second in the Galileo Prize Competition for Scientific Books (University od Padova) and entered a second edition.

Professor Wadhams also won a 2020 Visiting Professorship at the Politecnico di Torino.

Professorial Fellow Hugh Markus has been appointed as the new Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Stroke. This is the flagship journal of the World Stroke Organisation, which brings together clinicians and researchers interested in the stroke from throughout the world.

Former Clare Hall Presidents Attend Intimate Engagements Concert

It’s something that very rarely happens, but Clare Hall was delighted to welcome three of its former Presidents to College recently. Professor David Ibbetson was joined by his predecessors at our latest Intimate Engagements chamber music concert. Professor Dame Gillian Beer, Professor Ekhard Salje and Sir Martin Harris all enjoyed an evening of music by cellist Adrian Brendel and pianist David Dolan.

On Friday 7 February, the Tutors were pleased to host a formal dinner for senior PhD students and their supervisors. It was a great opportunity for students, supervisors, and Clare Hall Fellows from different disciplines to meet and talk about our research and much else.

Clare Hall Green Initiative Grant

The Green Office of the Graduate Student Body at Clare Hall is inviting applications from students with extraordinary green proposals for the Clare Hall Green Initiative Grant.

The Clare Hall GSB believes in sustainable investment and promoting green ventures. To encourage and empower our graduates in giving back to College through green initiatives, the GSB would like to award three grants of up to £75.
