Burns Night 2020

Burns Night has become quite a tradition in Clare Hall in recent years. Despite the fact that we have very few genuine Scots in the College at any one time, we always have a small number who long for their homeland and its merrymaking. But let’s also remember the many Clare Hallers who have earned degrees from the excellent Scottish universities or have conducted research up there. It’s fitting, then, that we should do our bit to memorialise Scotland’s Bard and to introduce him to the many other nationalities that pass through Clare Hall – and to have a bit of fun...

Clare Hall Tanner Lecture 2020

We were delighted to welcome Professor Jonathan L. Zittrain of Harvard University as our 2020 Tanner Lecturer.  Jonathan Zittrain is George Bemis Professor of International Law at Harvard University, Professor of Computer Science, Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and Professor, Harvard John F Kennedy School of Government. His theme was Gaining Power, Losing Control.

Clare Hall Life Member Susannah Maidment on the Evolution of Dinosaurs

Clare Hall Life Member Dr Susannah Maidment appears on the latest episode of Radio 4's The Life Scientific, available to download here. In the programme, Dr Maidment explains her fascination with dinosaurs, her recent dinosaur hunting trips to Morocco and how she became a world authority on Stegosaurs.

Dr Maidment was a Clare Hall Earth Sciences PhD student from 2003-2007 and currently works as a Researcher at the Natural History Museum.

Professor John Barrow elected as Academician of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences

The College is proud to send its warmest congratulations to Professor John Barrow on his election as Academician of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.

This is the oldest supranational Academy in the world and has a strictly limited number of members. He joins Martin Rees, Honorary Fellow of Clare Hall, and Life Member Paul Berg.

Dr Mene Pangalos Awarded Knighthood for Services to UK Science

Gillian Beer Awarded Honorary Doctorate

Congratulations to former Clare Hall President, Gillian Beer, on being awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Chichester in October 2019.

In her speech, Dame Gillian said, 'It is an honour and a pleasure to accept this honorary degree from the University of Chichester. It is also particularly poignant for me personally since my mother Ruth Burley (as she was named in those days before her marriages) and her younger sister Hilda both did their teacher training at Bishop Otter College, the founding institution of this university, in the mid 1920s.'
