Dr Keren Hammerschlag
Dr Keren Hammerschlag is the Director of the Centre for Art History and Art Theory in the School of Art and Design at the Australian National University in Canberra. Her research focuses on nineteenth-century British art and visual culture, and the many intersections and frictions between art and medicine during the Victorian and Edwardian periods. She is the author of Frederic Leighton: Death, Mortality and Resurrection (Ashgate, 2015) and The Chosen Race: Troubling Whiteness in Victorian Painting (University of California Press, 2026), and co-editor of Borderline Bodies in Art and Visual Culture: Unsettling Identity and Place since 1800 (Manchester University Press, 2026). Her current research project examines angels and other heavenly bodies in Victorian art and visual culture.
