Sudipto Sarkar

Sudipto Sarkar was elected a Foundation Fellow at Clare Hall in 2025. He is a Barrister and Senior Advocate (SA) based in India.

He was called to the Bar in 1973 by Gray’s Inn, London, and is an Associate Member of Six Pump Court Chambers, Temple, London.

He has been practising as an Advocate for over fifty years, thirty years of which as a Senior Advocate. He has extensive practice in Corporate and Commercial Law and Arbitrations.

He has appeared as a Senior Counsel in several arbitrations, both domestic and international, and has acted as an arbitrator in domestic and international arbitrations. He has also given evidence as an expert witness in international arbitrations and courts outside India.

He is a Member of the Panel of Arbitrators of Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) and Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC).

His name is included in the LCIA database of arbitrators.

He has been the editor of several editions of Sarkar on Evidence, Sarkar on Civil Procedure Code and Sarkar on Specific Relief Act, all leading publications on Indian Law.

Sarkar on Evidence (1st edition 1914) is the leading publication on the Law of Evidence in South Asia, South East Asia and East Africa and has been so for decades. He has been associated with several editions of Ramaiya’s Company Law, the leading publication on Company Law in India, and is currently the General Editor.

He has been on the Board of Directors of several well-known large listed companies in India, viz. Vesuvius India Limited, JSW Steel Limited, Triveni Engineering Industries Limited, EIH Limited and EIH Associated Limited of the Oberoi Hotel Group, Bombay Stock Exchange Limited (nominated by the regulator) and others.

He has a B.A. and M.A. in Law from Jesus College, Cambridge, as also an LL.B. in International Law (later redesignated to LL.M).
