Gaurav Chaudhary is a Postdoctoral researcher in the Theory of Condensed Matter Group of Cavendish Laboratory and a research fellow at Clare Hall.

Gaurav’s research interests lie in the broad field of quantum materials theory, with an aim to predict and explain quantum phenomena observable in solid state materials. For example, why does a piece of iron behave like a magnet when put next to a magnet? Or how does a piece of metal become superconducting at low temperatures and transports electricity without any energy loss? To answer these questions, one requires a quantum mechanical description of the statistically large number of electrons in the underlying material. The above-mentioned are examples of quantum phenomena in solid state materials that are known for decades.

More contemporary examples of quantum phenomena include fractionalization where electrons collectively behave as if they are only a fraction of themselves or Majorana modes where particles behave as their own anti-particles. These very exotic phenomena also have potential applications in future quantum computing devices. To understand these phenomena Gaurav uses tools from quantum field theory and topology. Gaurav is also interested in collaborating with experimental scientists to realize these phenomena in real materials.

Gaurav obtained his PhD in 2019 from the Department of Physics at the University of Texas, Austin and subsequently conducted research in the Chicago area at the University of Chicago and Argonne National Lab.
