Professor Lassi Roininen

Professor Lassi Roininen (b. 1979, Finland) is a Finnish applied mathematician specialising in computational mathematics, Bayesian inversion, and geophysical applications. He earned his MSc in Applied Mathematics from Tampere University of Technology in 2006 and completed his PhD at the University of Oulu in 2015, where his doctoral research focused on Bayesian inverse problems. In 2017, he was awarded the title of Docent (Adjunct Professor) in Applied Mathematics at the University of Oulu. Roininen’s career includes several international institutions. He has held postdoctoral positions at Tallinn University of Technology, the University of Warwick, and Imperial College London. He is also affiliated with the Quantum Leap Africa Research Centre at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences and contributes to Finland’s FAME Flagship programme.

Since 2018, Professor Roininen has been part of Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT University), first as Associate Professor and, since 2022, as Full Professor of Applied Mathematics. He currently serves as Head of the Degree Programme in Computational Engineering and Vice-head of the Department of Computational Engineering. His leadership role integrates mathematics, statistics and computer science, shaping the next generation of computational engineers. Professor Roininen is known for developing Gaussian and non-Gaussian priors for Bayesian inversion. His work has consistently bridged theory and practice, with applications in tomography, subsurface imaging, radar analysis, and remote sensing.
