Professor Aran Garcia-Lekue
Aran Garcia-Lekue received her Degree in Physics at the EHU (University of the Basque Country) in 1998, obtaining the Extraordinary Degree Prize.
In 2003, she obtained her European PhD (Summa Cum Laude) also at EHU. In 2003 she obtained a Marie-Curie Postdoctoral EU Grant to develop her research at the University of Liverpool (UK). In 2005, she joined the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL, in USA) where she held a Postdoctoral Fellowship funded by the DoE (Department of Energy). In 2007, she was awarded a Gipuzkoa Fellowship to carry out her research activity at Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC). In 2012, she obtained an Ikerbasque Fellow to continue her work at DIPC, and in 2024 she was promoted for an Ikerbasque Professor position. Since October 2024 she is also Director of Strategic Projects at DIPC.
Her main research lines are related to the theory and simulation of quantum nanoelectronics. In the last years, she has been very active in the investigation of graphene based nanostructures, which has allowed her to build a strong network of theoretical and experimental collaborators. She has been a Mercator Fellow at the University of Kiel in Germany, as well as visiting researcher at LBNL in Berkeley and DTU in Copenhagen. In 2025, she was awarded the Ikerbasque Consolidator Prize by the Basque Government, in recognition of her outstanding contributions as a leading researcher in her field. Since 2017, she is a member of Jakiunde, the Basque Academy for Sciences, Arts and Letters and, since 2023, she has been a member of the editorial board of Revista Española de Física by the RSEF (Royal Spanish Society of Physics).
Her regular participation in activities aimed at the general public, particularly young people, highlights her commitment to science dissemination and to raising the profile of women in science.
At Clare Hall, Aran Garcia-Lekue is accompanied by her partner, Iker Egaña, who holds a Degree in Fine Arts by EHU (University of Basque Country). He worked in animation for several years and is currently focused on painting and drawing.
